Little LifeSavers Equality and Diversity Statement
Little LifeSavers is a charity that provides free basic life support training for schoolchildren aged 9-13 years. Our training is provided by adult volunteer instructors who have received training from the charity to provide the one-hour sessions in schools. The only criteria for volunteering is:
- Some availability during the school-day so training can be provided
- An enhanced DBS Check to ensure the safeguarding of children
The only criteria for receiving a Little LifeSavers training session is that
- The children are of the stated age range
- 5 to 60 children attend the session
- There is adequate floor space for our volunteers to conduct the session
Little LifeSavers is committed to making the activities of our organisation available to everyone. We strive to create a safe and inclusive atmosphere within our organisation so that everyone-both the users of our service and our volunteers, trustees and employees, feel valued and respected. We aim to treat everyone within our organisation or who accesses our training equally, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, background or disability.
Some Examples of How We Will Be Inclusive
Our Volunteering opportunity and our teaching sessions are available to everyone. We use the Disclosure and Barring Service Enhanced Check as a means to ensure our safeguarding responsibilities are met. There are no criteria for either volunteering or using our service which are
unnecessary and would otherwise exclude sections of the community.
We advertise and promote the work of the charity and the volunteering opportunity as widely as possible so as to include every section of the population.
Our training videos are simple and we have used subtitles to ensure clarity so volunteers and recipients who may be hearing impaired can access the information.
The videos are freely accessible so the ability to pay is not a barrier. They can be watched repeatedly as well as shown in schools- so as to allow everyone access to the teaching we provide, and to support our volunteers in their teaching activities regardless of previous training or experience.
Code of Conduct
We recognise that society is very diverse and we value that diversity. Members of our organisation agree to treat everyone equally and fairly and harassment and discrimination will not be tolerated. Please see our separate Code of Conduct Policy
People will be treated with dignity and respect regardless of race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, disability and/or age.
At all times people’s feelings will be valued and respected. Language or humour that people find offensive will not be used, e.g. sexist or racist jokes or terminology which is derogatory to someone with a disability.
No one will be harassed, abused or intimidated on the ground of his or her race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, disability or age. Incidents of harassment will be taken seriously.
Dealing with Complaints
The Board of Trustees are committed to taking reports of Harassment or discrimination seriously.
Complaints and concerns must be raised with the Chairperson – Dr Barbara Stanley Barbara@littlelifesavers.org by email within 24hours of the event.
The Board of Trustees will investigate the complaint, listening to all members involved. (If the complaint is against a trustee, that trustee will not be part of conducting the investigation).
If the complaint is against a particular individual, this person will have the opportunity to express their point of view, accompanied by a friend. The person making the complaint will also have this opportunity.
If the complaint is against the Charity as a whole, the Board of Trustees will work to ensure that such discrimination is not repeated in the future and will inform the volunteers of how they propose to do this.
Any decision to exclude a person from the organisation due to discriminatory or harassing behaviour will be made with reference to the Charity’s constitution. The charity will support people who feel they have been harassed or discriminated against, and will not victimise or treat them less well because they have raised this.
This policy will be reviewed every two years.
